New parametrization method for salt permeability of reverse osmosis desalination membranes

نویسندگان

چکیده

Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most important membrane technology for desalination of water. Measured water and salt fluxes are traditionally analyzed in context solution-diffusion (SD) model which leads to a permeability, A, B. However, this parametrization flux not correct by RO membranes, because these membranes show markedly different retentions feed concentrations, classical observation literature, effect captured SD model. Thus, traditional permeability B an intrinsic property membranes. We present new analysis 1:1 salt, follows from transport theory that based on assumption coions strongly excluded membrane, we demonstrate it accurately describes large dataset retention as function pressure concentration. This unique values permeabilities, A B″, dependent concentration or permeate flux. Because now have improved parametrization, can more compare study detail how performance depends conditions such type temperature. The equation provide guidance design high-performance process modeling systems.

Novel Membrane Materials for Reverse Osmosis Desalination

The use of solvents in desalination processes limits the use of certain materials in the construction of the reverse osmosis membranes. Therefore now the research effort has focused on improving new materials. In particular, nanostructured materials will probably form the basis for new reverse osmosis membrane materials. This study makes a review of the new materials used for the construction o...

Salt cleaning of organic-fouled reverse osmosis membranes.

Cleaning of organic-fouled reverse osmosis membranes with concentrated salt solutions has been investigated. Polysaccharides (alginate and pectin) and Suwannee River natural organic matter were used as model organic foulants. By systematically varying the chemical and physical factors affecting salt cleaning efficiency, we were able to elucidate the processes and mechanisms involved during salt...

Water permeability of nanoporous graphene at realistic pressures for reverse osmosis desalination.

Nanoporous graphene (NPG) shows tremendous promise as an ultra-permeable membrane for water desalination thanks to its atomic thickness and precise sieving properties. However, a significant gap exists in the literature between the ideal conditions assumed for NPG desalination and the physical environment inherent to reverse osmosis (RO) systems. In particular, the water permeability of NPG has...

Optimization of the Sequence of Washing Reverse Osmosis Membranes Used for Seawater Desalination

Seawater contains a number of organic and inorganic components that cause fouling of membranes when subjected to a process of reverse osmosis desalination. This fouling is one of the most important problems in the management of desalination plants, as it entails a significant loss in system performance. For membranes to be able to continue operating under appropriate conditions, they must under...
